Middle School Reader

Variety was the watchword for this project. The thumbnails on this page link to pictures I made for Dreams on Wheels, a middle school reader produced in 2004 by the Developmental Studies Center in Oakland, California. In addition to some photographs, the anthology of 35 readings used four illustrators, but the editor asked us to use different styles from reading to reading  to enhance the sense of variety in the collection.

The editor, and her illustrators in turn, were caught between late-breaking textual edits and an approaching deadline at the printer’s. By the time I got the green light to do my finals, I had about a month to complete 32 illustrations. This was before I started using a computer as part of my illustration process, and it was good hectic fun turning out images in a variety  of  more traditional media.
